Male cats respond more excitedly than females, although some cats show no interest at all, as the predisposition to enjoying a "catnip fix" is genetic and tends to become apparent at maturity, around six months of age.
The active ingredient of catnip which so many cats find irresitable is nepetalactone, which is extracted from the plant, and used to great effect in cat toys and cat furniture.
Catnip is a hardy, perennial herb with soft moss green leaves producing white or lavender flower spikes in early summer. A very attractive plant, it is available to buy in the UK at many garden centres and nurseries. Catnip likes well drained sandy soil and a regular trim encourages the plant to produce more of its tender new leaves that cats love.
Catnip is a member of the mint family and can be used in cooking, salads and herbal teas, providing a comfortable, relaxed, high feeling, producing a sedative and soporific (sleep inducing) effect. It also eases digestion and gas, and has a warming affect on the body.
No wonder cats like it so much!!
